Several times each year, the upper Nantahala River comes alive with excitement during special water releases by Duke Energy. These releases create a surge of fast-moving, forceful water that transforms the river into a paradise for skilled kayakers seeking a challenge. The whitewater rush attracts paddlers from near and far, drawn by the unique opportunity to navigate the powerful currents and swirling rapids.
It is not just for kayakers though. Spectators flock to the riverbank along Wayah Road to witness the action. When the extra water is released from Nantahala Lake it creates a forceful water-surge in the upper Nantahala River that kayakers love to paddle while onlookers love to watch.

The final release of 2026 is this weekend.
Flow rates for Friday the 26th from 10:00 – 5:00 are to be 300 cubic feet per second.
Flow rates for Saturday the 27th from 10:00 – 3:00 are to be 425 cubic feet per second.
Flow rates for Saturday the 27th from 3:00 – 5:00 are to be 250 cubic feet per second.
These times are when the flowrate shown is expected reach the confluence of White Oak Creek and the Nantahala River. It then moves downstream and eventually into the Nantahala Gorge. These flowrates are in addition to the natural flow of the river through the Gorge,
Where to Watch the Upper Nantahala River Water Release
Spectators should bring chairs, snacks and cameras and position themselves along Wayah Road between Old River Road and the power plant. Drivers should expect traffic congestion and distracted pedestrians (many carrying Kayaks and gear). Everyone should expect fun and excitement.

This is just one of many events that makes Nantahala special. Soon the quiet winter season will be upon us and the lively season of paddle sports will end.
